Thread: E6 vs Z6, CPU wise.

  1. #1

Default E6 vs Z6, CPU wise.

The E6 uses a ARMv5TE based Intel Xscale PXA270 clocked at 312Mhz (I think) at max load (Intel designs it to go upto 624Mhz, but unless we open up our phones and slap on heat dissipation equipment (heatsink or such), it'll burn up). There's also supposed to be an acceleration chip in there (ATI Imageon I think). Intel adds SIMD instructions to the architecture (which zmplayer exploits to provide video playback).

The Z6 uses a ARMv6 based i.MX31(ARM1136J(F)-S) SoC chip from Freescale (Motorola, formerly) clocked somewhere near 500Mhz at max load (from ARM's documents).

Now, the main differences between these chips is that the Z6 has a) deeper pipeline, b) hardware Java execution (Jazelle). But articles on the web indicate that Motorola got rid of one of the co processors that they used in their old designs.

The same chip is used in the N93/95, Zune, N800, a cut-down version with TrustZone (DRM) in the iPhone etc.

To some of the more coding inclined people in the forums - how do these processors compete, raw performance wise? I played with an Z6 when I went to buy my E6 and the UI seemed sluggish compared the the E6. Also, how moddable do you think the phone will be?

The Z6 is running at a max load of 500 or 550 Mhz, am not sure, but ti has'nt touched the 600Mhz mark, although it can run at 650 with no porblem.

The UI speed is not dependant only on the CPU speed but the RAM, SWAP if any(whcih would'nt be present in the Z6), buffer and te software optimisation. The EZX platform has had over 5 years for software optimisation while the LJ has had only about a year of optimisation. When its fully optimised on future models you'll see the difference in speed.

    Corrected, thanks.

Also keep in mind that the A1200 & E2 actually have two processors. I am not sure if the V8 and Z6 also have dual processors.. But if it doesn't thats could play a factor in speed ect..

Yes, the PXA270 has a co-processor. There is also an additional accelerator for 2D(3D as well?). This makes up the "three" processors in the Motorola EZX platform.

I wish someone could provide more detail about the Z6/V8 platform.

What more info do you want? Theres another processor on board, for the flashing and flexing the Neptune processor, and another one which is the DAC, there no DAP, which would have been a nice addition. The freescale processor is ARM11 which supports excellent 3D graphics, check jbenchmark for a ARM9 vs ARM11 comparison

I think E2 has very bad software optimization right?

E2 has actually older software than even the MING or E6, only the UI is new, but the core is old, the phone was released with insufficent testing, the UI and core interaction was fully optimised before release is what I heard, I maybe wrong. Plus the 600Mhz processor of the E2 was dropped to 250, so in its out-of-the-box state its slower than the other phones.

I have overclocked the CPU of my E2 to 624mhz without problems...
There is a little speed increase, not as much as I expected though.....

How did you overclock your E2 ?
