what's the data transfer speed of your card? It should be enough as far as reading the data goes...
But tell me anyway since if it's ridiculously slow swap could be a bad idea. But I really doubt that's the problem, I have eplayer, video, and swap on my SD card. It SHOULD be okay...

problem went almost completely away using swap. is it okay to turn off your phone without turning swapfile off?
yes. But REMEMBER to swapoff when taking out the SD card.
yes, it is but as butcher says remember to turn it off before taking out the SD card and BEFORE connecting to the comp via mass storage mode.
If you're still experiencing skipping somewhat regularly you might want to reduce the bitrates.
For example, mpeg's can use higher bitrates since they require less processing, divx needs medium bitrates, and if you try to use h.264 you'll need really low bitrates if there's lots of action cause otherwise it will majorly skip (I really don't suggest using h.264 under any circumstances)
