    Hi,

Try to open a console (usually all the distributions have a console on the installation, try <alt>+F9 (or some other Function key if F9 doesnt work), or do it with a live cd).

    run:
cfdisk /dev/<your HD> (looks like your HD is sda (scsi), if it is IDE, try hda)
Arrange your partitions, do not forget to create a swap partition.

    run:
    mkfs /dev/<your HD><partition number>
eg, if Linux is the third partition on the first IDE disk, /dev/hda3

    run:
    mkswap /dev/<your HD><swap partition number>

Try to install ubuntu again, there is no need to reformat the partition as it was already formated before.

Im not a ubuntu user, so i cant give you simpler steps than these generic instructions.

I got almost same situation when installing Fedora 7 today. My IDE HDD recognized as SCSI disk (sda) and failed to re-partition with strange error message. Using text mode installation, resolve my problem.
