Thread: e680i telnet...

  1. #1

    Default e680i telnet...

Can anyone tell me how you got the e680i to have an ip address in the first place? I'm having the hardest time doing that. I have linloder installed and I tried the script "acmattach.lin" but it just won't work. Any ideas? My phone is set in modem mode and I connect it via usb and then run the script but still it won't work...

for usb networking the phone will assign its own address depending on what version of the drivers you are using (generally w/ Win the phone uses 169.254.142.2; with linux it gets 192.168.1.2).

do you know for sure that linloader is working properly? and if you are using Win, are you using the correctly modified belcarra driver file?

Yes linloader is definitely working and I'm trying to network the phone under RedHat Linux Enterprise WS... I've also tried using the phone under WIndows XP after installing the driver from "e680i_essentials" and patching, still the phone isn't recognized and I get no ip address...

when you connect the phone to the redhat machine does anything show up in lsusb or usbview? i'm not so familiar with newer redhat distributions but is usbnet included and listed in the loaded modules? i recently went through this with a new SuSE install; when i connected the phone (in usblan mode) to the PC it showed up in usbview as Motorola USBLan (in red; not recognized). as soon as i did modprobe -v usbnet it reconized it and the connection was made (for telnet, samba or whatever). I did have to bring up the local usbnet on the PC by hand (ifconfig usb0 up 192.168.1.11); the phone got 192.168.1.2.

Ok when I connect the phone I get "Motorola PCS C330 GSM Phone" with lsusb on the terminal. Doing modprobe -v usbnet I get the following:
    insmod /lib/modules/2.6.9-5.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/net/mii.ko
    insmod /lib/modules/2.6.9-5.ELsmp/kernel/drivers/usb/net/usbnet.ko
With all this there's still no ip for the phone listed under ifconfig; ifconfig usb0 ... doesn't work. Says such device doesn't exist. I'm not sure if this'll help but connecting the phone as "mass storage" under this linux distro brings the phone under /media/MOTO680i and not the usual usb related path...

when i do modprobe -v usbnet I get:
    Code:
    insmod /lib/modules/2.6.13-15-default/kernel/drivers/usb/net/usbnet.ko
and i'm wondering if the usbnet that is included for your kernel version needs to be patched. I am no expert on this but i remember reading that before a certain version of the kernel that you have to patch usbnet and rebuild for it to work with the phone. (this is partly why i upgraded to the 2.6.13 kernel; but i cant remember exactly from what kernel on the patch is not required)

Ok thanks for the quick reply...I guess I'll try some other distro then...hopefully I'll be able to telnet the phone then.
