PPP over USB!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guyz,

tonight I managed to bring up a PPP session over USB from my Powerbook (MAC) to the A780

This means the USBLAN era is over!!!!

We can just fire up PPP on our hosts and do whatever we need (telnet, samba.... you name it). If it works on my Mac will work on any Linux box... I was not able however to fire it up on Win2k, the stupid dial-up networking insists in trying to reset a modem which obviously does not exist...

Anyway, add on top of all this that we can now have a writeable /etc...

I will post the scripts when I finish cleaning them up.

what is PPP exactly?

PPP is a way to carry an Internet link over a point to point connection like a dialup modem
or a serial line (USB can be seen as an high speed serial line for this purpose).

This means you can connect to your phone with any service you desire.
Basically, telnet runs over PPP, so does file sharing with samba,:
you can NFS mount a file system that is on your host from your phone, and so on....
endless possibilities!!

PPP can be used, provided that the mobile line include data call, else with normal subscription, it will not connect.

Can be done, I have always use my phone on laptop to dial to ISP, be it through infrared or bluetooth.

should work on Windos too, but the default dialup connector sucks...
the problem is the dialup connector sees the Moto USB modem as a modem,
but since the phone is in PPP mode already, we should find a way to skip the
dialing part. The dialing part on win2k includes resetting the modem with an ATZ
and awaiting an OK reply. This is what prevents the thing to work on win2k.
This ATZ-sending part cannot be disabled, seem to be a driver built-in...
Any suggestions welcome!

ah ok.. i use the "normal" way over USBLAN then.. it works good on this way..
