I don't know a way to do this on the mobile.
You can do it on your computer.
The file on E6 has a different name and not native.db

It's a berkeley database, if you are a programmer there are tools.
There are python scripts too for that...
I think someone tried to create a phone application, but i don't know if he succeed ...

Well, it's said to be for A1200, E2, and probably Gen1 models, so i think it's possible to use them on E6...
I 've no E6, but i'll try to do something on my A1200, to be able to tell you more, rogerthat, if you don't beat me at that.

Is it not just easier to copy the sms into, say the notes utility and save it as a text file? That text file can then be opened with something like fb reader which provides comprehensive search abiliites?

I am assuming here that the asker needs to search through one single sms which is large in size; very large in size
