Thread: Which Moto is best for a Linux Fan?

  1. Smile Which Moto is best for a Linux Fan?

I am a die-hard Linux fan. Besides PC, I want to play Linux on cell phones too.

I am looking for a Moto that is at low/middium price, suitable for Linux hackers(if I'm one). Right now, I am considering buying a E6,E8 or ZN5. A1200 is also reasonable for me.

    Mainly, I want to do:
    1. bash scripting
    2. customizing
    3. programming

    So, what's your suggestion??

    Welcome to Motorolafans.com.

You have asked a very genuine question for laying the foundation of your modding future and i am glad for it.

Being a cell phone tester myself , i have come across all the three phones you mentioned.i myself own an e6.

Motozine 5 is basically a hardcore multimedia phone. It does not allow much for modding as you would like or expect from other linux based phones.Although i dont know much about its functionality , i can surely say that multimedia heavy phones are not much open for modding.

Personally , i hate the e8.I dont like anything about it.Not the screen size, not the morphing keypad, and whatever.I simply dislike it and so dont know much about modding prospects.

As for E6 , whatever i have experienced till now has been pleasing.i have loved each and every tweak rokr e6 has given us.Just have a look at the posts in the forum and you would know.I am not being biased, just frank.

As for a1200 , i would suggest you to make a choice between a1200 and e6 as they both have same modding and programming prospects. But remember E6 is a much more multimedia capable phone than what a1200 is.So why not go for the E6.

i dont wish to hurt the owners of zine5 , a1200 or e8.I am just presenting facts and knowing there are more knowledgeable members at the forum , i would like to listen from them.

in my opinion the best for you would be E6/A1200 - choosing between them is the matter of your preferences in form factor of the handset.
again in my opinion E6 is better (no limitation in FW tracks cross-flashing as in A1200 different tracks' releases, candybar form factor for me is a plus, 3.5 mm stereo jack, hot swap SD card support, accum of bigger capacity).
But please mind that EZX platform E6 and A1200 are running (as well as Motomagix in E8/ZN5) are really far from what is generally understood under Linux... unfortunately... These platforms are heavily customized by Motorola and there's no SDK released (and no plans as far as I know). Although there's quite successfull project of porting Qtopia OS to E6/A1200 but still with 2.4 Kernel.
So if you're looking for a linux device - you better look at Nokia N810 - IT'S NOT A PHONE though but an internet tablet.
    Hope that helps!

Actually, I have been looking at E6 for a long time. I think E6 is the one for me, as many resources for E6 are available. And E6 is cheap also!

    Anyway, thanks for your helps.
