Default Questions about Firmware experiences on E6

hi everyone, I'm a new E6 user and love my phone

anyway the first thing I wanted to do was update my firmware, so on the night after i received my phone, i flashed it to firmware R533_G_11.12.08P. i chose this one because it was mentioned on a mototheme.com, a website i came across before MFC. now, there are definitely deferences between the performance of 12.08p and the original firmware on my phone, which i believe was 10.54p.

    After updating firmware:
-Mass storage mode is no longer automatically triggered when Usb cord is connected, i have to restart the phone each time.
-Sometimes when unplugging the Usb adapter while in mass-storage mode (and connected to PC as a drive), the phone seems to freeze and immediately restart.

I didn't try the MPKG installer and EZX applications until after i updated my firmware. i'm wondering, will the MPKG installer and EZX applications work on all known e6 firmware, or are the generic and modified firmwares listed here required?

the key information i'm looking for is:
    what firmware do you use?

what video players and emulators do you use?

do they run well or do they seem to be unstable?

how is video playback for you and what codecs/bitrates etc do you use?

how does mass storage work for you: does it trigger immediately when you connect the usb cord to your pc or do you need to restart your phone?

how does your volume work? (currently, things on my phone are either too loud or too quiet and there isn't enough "volume steps" for my taste between the loudest and quietest levels.)

-how fast does your phone start while powering (booting) up?
    thanks guys!

    Here is my suggestions:

Im using the .10p motorolafans by aksd, Its fast and provides many options for startup and such. Another good option is the .08p Hybrid by Ahman, its one of the most popular and very stable.

Both of those firmwares allow for startup scripts.

For media players, I prefer eXMMS for music and just the stock realplayer. qEZX works fine for other types of video files.

Im running gPSP for Gameboy Advance games and EzxEmu for NES, SNES, SEGA games, The GBA runs a bit slow, but most games are VERY playable and much better than the java games. The NES, SNES, SEGA games run really nice.

Mass storage mode works fine as long as the Swap file isnt on.

Boot up is pretty fast on both of those firmwares

    @ Neo_e6

few of modded f/w default their usb mode to modem mode, instead of mass storage..
so u just need to change it manually to mass storage,
    Menu > Setup > USB Mode >

    i've flashed my E6 to various type of 07P, 08P, 09P & 10P..
personally, 09P & 10P got better speed than the others.. however there is a few 09P & 10P monsterpacks which are still slow, due to tons of applications they load into it..

i'm not into games, but yes for entertaiment..
so i played mp4 files on the stock realplayer & mp3 on exmms..
    (15 fps for mp4 vids)

as for the boot-start speed, it depends on the f/w..

    i haven't changed to a deferent f/w yet

thanks Chefanim and KooNKHaR (your user names are such tongue twisters)

    @KooNKHaR
thanks for the heads up on that, although i did look into my settings already to see if that was the issue, and it seems set to mass storage already. BUT, since you mentioned it, i changed the setting to webcam, saved, then changed it back to mass storage and saved, and now i plugged my usb cord into my phone and BAM, mass storage baby, no need to restart my phone..you rule homie

    @Chefanim
speed ups in f/w versions is a big plus, i will try the other ones, but i'm wondering, do you use real player just out of it being convienently pre-installed or because of negative experience with ezx players?

so far, i've tried zmplayer and qezxplayer, both will play video, but zmplayer doesn't get as angry with me when i pause or fast forward/rewind. so i'll probably stay with zmplayer for now. i also encoded video in xvid, 553 target bitrate, 320 by 240, 25fps, following examples i've read here at MFC. it does play better than a mp4 video i downloaded, i'm guessing that is probably because of a higher bitrate in the mp4 file. when i say play better, i mean that it is satisfactory with an occasional small, almost unnoticeable skip in playback. i'm just always on the prowl for any small improvement.

but more importantly, can anyone confirm if your f/w version effects stability of ezx applications?

i would think they probably would, and at the very least, probably run best on the f/w used by its coder lol

i'm going to try a couple different firmwares and post on my experiences later...

Good morning....and if I don't see ya, good afternoon good evening and goodnight

Default sometimes your first choice is best

i flashed to E6_R533_G_11.12.10P_Speedup_AHBN, and there did seem to be a slight speed increase in starting up and shutting down, but slight enough that i wasn't sure if it was just my imagination. although, some applications and menu options seemed to be more responsive too. but in less than 24 hours, lots of problems showed up. as a disclaimer though, this is a unique experience (to my knowledge anyway) and depending on the programs you use, you may not find any problems. so try different firmwares if you aren't satisfied with the one you currently have.

in my case however, i used a .system folder set up by motorolafans forum member Lhon0901, in the thread titled everyone SHARE ur SYSTEM folder HERE. page 2.

i primarily tried his/her .system folder because of this line up of apps:
    1.) Pkg installer (by earkin)
    2.) Busybox
    3.) ShowQ
    4.) LinLoader
    5.) MyStuff
6.) MySwap (with 16MB swap included)
7.) gpSP (gameboy advance emulator, i haven't tried this yet)
    8.) Hide Folder (HPF)
    9.) USBnet
    10.) sysinfo
    11.) Ekonsole
to install, replace your .system folder in the root of your SD card (unhide hidden folders in explorer)

(i especially liked this .system collection because i needed busybox to support earkin's skin/splash installer but i couldn't find a download link to busybox here at motorolafans)

i then installed earkin's skin/splash installer, exmms, and zmplayer. all ran fine originally, but under E6_R533_G_11.12.10P_Speedup_AHBN, the skin installer was much slower and exmms had graphical problems. flashing back to R533_G_11.12.08P fixed these problems.

i'm not a Linux guru, but i personally have a feeling that instability might have been caused by an incompatibility between the swap file utility and firmware E6_R533_G_11.12.10P_Speedup_AHBN. could a Linux expert confirm this for me?

for now, i'm sticking with 12.08p, but i'm going to contact user Lhon0901 and ask them what firmware they're using now with what applications. i'll keep y'all posted.

moderators: here's a suggestion, make several .system folder collections of applications, games, etc and using a test group, rate each collection's compatibility as a whole under different firmware versions
