Default **The 4GB and up FAQ** Please Sticky**

Doing this to answer the frequent threads started about can i use a 4GB card and so on...

    The 4GB and up F.A.Q./GUIDE

(This Whole Guide is Subject to change, as new mods can change the way things are on the E6. Also if im wrong or think something should be added tell me)

    What is SDHC?
    Secure Digital High Capacity

    What does this mean?
Well SDHC SD cards are no less then 4GB in size. These are compatiable with SDHC 2.0 Specification (its hardware thing).Anything below that ex. SD 1.0 (E6) specifications cannot use SDHC memory cards.
So this means the ROKR E6 SD slot must be hardware specs of the SD1.0 or SD1.1, because its is not able to utilize the 4GB SDHC cards. (SDHC 2.0)

UPDATE: This could all still be true. but as brought up by immahotguy, we dont know if the ROKR has the hardware yet. if it does have the hardware then a simple driver for the phone will be able to allow SDHC cards. We just have to wait for the kernel to become available.

Does the E6 support 4GB cards?
Yes and no. The E6 as of now supports STANDARD 4GB SD CARDS!!!
The card must first off be a 4GB SD Standard card, as in NOT SDHC. Once that is out of the way, you can now use your card, but not without certain restrictions.

Does the E6 support 8GB cards?
No, because the 8GB card more then likely is a SDHC card.

    What are the 4GB restrictions?
As if now this is what i have experienced and others too.
    1. Cannot connect phone and see the card as a "Flash Drive"
    2. Can really only transfer files in modem mode with your Motorola Phone Tools (MPT)
    3. Can not see hidden files with MPT, and till now i havent been able to see it with telenet either.(later on that)

What ways can I Access data on the 4GB card?
    1. Use MPT to do you basic transfers like Videos and Music, kinda slow to me but safe.
    2. Take the Card out and pop it into a card reader fastest transfers
    3. Telnet into phone for once again basics, and you can go through the firmware and such. to get to the memory card go too the folder called mmc. the click on mmcx (x is a number given to your folder)

    Tips 'N Tricks:
Q: MY card needed to be reformatted, and i did the long reformat. Now my phone only sees 2GB.

A: Do a quick reformat, it puts it back to 4GB. Dont ask me why, but im sure it has to do with the system it uses(fat16...IDK lol).

Q: pulled my card out and then put it back in. it doesnt work anymore?? Help!!

A: Check if you have the lock tab on or off. This is so you can not write to the card. (save on it) but also for some reason the phone wont see the card, but usually its that.

I read up on this chinese forum, and found this user shared his experiences with the 4G Transcend SD (non-SDHC). AT first the card came as FAT32, and my E6 converted it to FAT, which caused problems to read/write on the computer. He pointed out that he had to Format the card back to FAT32 using either WinXP or Panasonic SD Formatter(If it dosn't work w/ winxp). Then he stated he Formatted his SD to FAT16 and works perfectly on the E6. But i was having problems formatting it to FAT16, i didn't know how lol. So another user said he used cmd(DOS) /format VOLUME /FS:FAT /Q, and formatted my card to FAT. But, it seems that it worked & winxp recognizes it as 4G! I was able to copy movies on to it flawlessly, and before i couln't even get 1 mp3 on it. So i think the Format in cmd did the magic.

Known Cards to work (Non-SDHC, lets make this list bigger)
    Transend 150x Speeds
    A-Data 4 GB Turbo
    Transcend 4G SD Card(TS4GSDC)
Top Ram (idk i read it on a topic on this forum)

    Installing Java apps:
When you have downloaded your java app(.jar NOT .jad) you can just place it in your memory card. there are two ways of doing this. The first way is more user friendly, the next is with telnet. but i prefer telnet.

First get your MPT up. Then click File Transfer Studio. When you click here, navigate to your memory card. You can then just drop it in the root of your memory card.

When you are done placing the file in the phone, disconnect it(duh, lol) and then navigate to where you placed the file and install it. i choose to install to memory card usually.

Next way i prefer. The reason is because MPT likes to crash on me idk why and its slower, i think. Anyways first telnet to the root of your phone. (im using Samba) Click the folder called mmc, then click mmca1.(this could be different for you)You are now in your root directory. now just drag the .jar file in here. or if you want into your programs folder.

    helped out:

    Transcend 4G SD Card(TS4GSDC)
I've tried to use the SD card reader on my laptop, wouln't even read it. I tried 2 multi card reader adapters won't work properly. And i also tried MPT and won't work with mp3's -_-. But my PS3 works on copying .MP4 and .MP3 to SD Flawlessly. I can hook up ext HDD to PS3 and copy files to SD card. Although my PS3 reads SD @ 2G, My PC sometimes reads it, and when it does. it shows 4G. So i guess im only loading up this 4G with movies and music for now lol

Vampirex proudly presents, how i got my 4G Transcend to work properly.

I read up on this chinese forum, and found this user shared his experiences with the 4G Transcend SD (non-SDHC). AT first the card came as FAT32, and my E6 converted it to FAT, which caused problems to read/write on the computer. I was able to copy movies on to it flawlessly, and before i couln't even get 1 mp3 on it. So i think the Format in cmd did the magic.

So to those whom have 4G SD Cards (non-SDHC) or same as me have problems. Try this method, I can't guarantee it will work. But its worth a try! And post up your results, with information on card please. Maybe i'm on to something lol

Your proposed sticky isn't entirely true... SDHC support is a software end deal, not a hardware end. This is why there are firmware updates for multiple devices that had not previously been able to understand SDHC cards, that allow them to understand any SDHC card. (See Here, Here)

In short, it's not necessarily a hardware issue, as we don't know exactly what the hardware in the mobile is. Though, you could say: ATM, SDHC cards do not work. We just need a kernel source. That is where the drivers are. We could add them and do the necessary mods to have the phone recognize SDHC (in theory of course) and then prove whether or not it will work. My gut tells me that we could add support.
I'm so cool, I had the E6 before the E2 launched! Wait. Never mind...

There is a hardware issue. Surprisingly, this is for the cards themselves. Officially, the limit of the SD format is 2GB due to an addressing limitation. Different manufacturers use different methods to extend the format to 4GB. This is the reason certain 4GB cards have higher compatibility than others.

Also, it seems like the real change required for SDHC support is pretty minor. But it still requires a kernel level change, minor as it maybe. So we have to wait for the kernel source or a future firmware from Motorola that addresses this problem (pun unintended :P).

Very true. The only hardware issue is the card itself. As far as our device is concerned, we could most likely update the kernel drivers, and I heard it was some libraries as well, and that's as much as we'd have to do. I really do hope to get SDHC support on this mobile. It would be amazing. The 4GB method is nice and all. but I don't want to have to jump through hoops when wanting to sync my music everytime...

true that and nice examples , the first thread should be edited to avoid confusion
granted nothing proves the E6 would be able to read sdhc with a software update , but implying it is ae hardware is totaly false .

Now Motorola where is that kernel !

the reason i said its hardware is beacsue of this
    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2094767,00.asp
    http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1441
    Mainly these:
Q: What are the differences between a standard SD/miniSD card and the new SDHC/miniSDHC card?
A: While identical in shape, the new SDHC and miniSDHC cards are technically different than standard SD and miniSD cards in how they are recognized by a host device. This difference allows manufacturers like SanDisk to produce higher capacity cards, from 4-gigabytes all the way up to 32-gigabytes. The SDHC and miniSDHC cards will have a new logos and are only compatible with host devices that are also SDHC or miniSDHC compliant.
BUT we dont know yet if ROKR is one of the devices that are compatiable yet. becasue as was said, we dont know the hard ware yet. as for the firmware updates u showed (immahotguy) maybe the company could of had the hardware already, maybe the firmware was not written with the driver yet when the camera was released.

idk if you undersatnd how im coming from my point of view, usally ahrd for me to put my thoughts into words, lol.

either way ill add urs to the guide too. becasue its true we jst dont know yet.

    Juan

    EDIT:
O SNAP lol. i found this
    http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(1982)-SDSDBR-4096-SanDisk_Standard_SDHC_Card_4GB.aspx
Scroll all the way to the bottom. choose the option.
The E2 and the old ROKR are compatiable with SDHC cards. so maybe all we need is the kernel, that would be nice!!!

    EDIT: iwasWRONG soory guys.
