I dont know what was actually intended by daniel.santos, but to me it does not look like an "obvious" joke. it would really make sense in some cases, to 've a swap in ram instead of not having a swap at all. one important point is that: without a swap, there would be no way for the VM to evict the dirty pages and to give room for new pages. even though, u create a swap in ram, swap still has some benefits over not having it at all and using ONLY ram.

btw, its too big a topic to be discussed here. search in the internet for "ram as swap" and its a big big discussion.

just wanted to share this so that someone reading this thread, shall not assume this as just a joke!

I found a way to get a really fast swap file!!! You need busybox or some other form of mkswap.

dd if=/dev/zero of=/ram/awsomeswap bs=1024 count=16384
mkswap -v0 /ram/awsomeswap 16384
/bin/sync
/sbin/swapon /ram/awsomeswap
