    I read something about a working USB Ethernet support by Openezx at http://gnumonks.org/~laforge/weblog/...2-kernel26-udc With a little help from those who are able bodied at programming they could complete their opensource alternative to Motorola's EZX. Maybe we could see USB WiFi support in the future.

    Opensource motorola doesn't seem so friendly. It has a wiki but it is empty.

    Just could not wait to get my hands on a Motorola A780. Seems nobody is selling here in my province anymore I would try buying it in Manila or ask someone from singapore to buy it for me.

    I wish I could program that I might be able to contribute to the community here at motorolafans and at openezx. Where should I start to help at the development of Openezx? e.g. "c+"?

    Looks like the launching of Opensource Motorola is also a call of Motorola to unify Java

    You are mistaken. USB Ethernet support means that usb client part of intel's processor is able to work in ethernet emulation mode. This is what you get now using USBLAN with Belcara drivers. This is not related to the USB Host part of processor.

    @borgs
    if you want to help openezx look at this:
    http://lists.gnumonks.org/pipermail/...ay/000423.html
    also there is a todo:

    The a780-e680.tar.bz2 contains many useful things ...

    gcc-3.3 montavista patches !!!!
    glibc montavista patches !!!!
    mmc kernel driver source ...can be useful to implement a SDIO (wifi!) driver?
    a780-blob... the bootloader source code ?

    Having it as an emulated service wouldn't stop someone from making usb wifi. I heard that the host part of the processor is connected to the BP.

    Tnx Swifty

    I am just curious, about the openezx project. It is understandable that they would have to create a whole new set of driver for the linux 2.6 kernel that they are working on. But according to the extent of my understanding of what I read, the team at openezx is having problems because the drivers of Motorola is still not opensource even when they got some source before the launching of opensource motorola. Would the development be easier for them after the launching of opensource motorola? I still hear some rumors that the drivers are still closed. And the comment of Harald is that the released source is still not yet complete http://gnumonks.org/~laforge/weblog/...ola-opensource.

    @borgs

    i a not a developer, so i dont understand anything on openezx.
    i think the launching of opensource.motorola have not made things easier.
    but the work of the team at openezx is very awesome.
    maybe the irc logs make things clearer:

    I think you didn't understand what I wrote above. Emulated ethernet on USB is something that we have now with Belcara drivers. You cannot connect usb wifi stick to that, because phone is not acting as usb host controller. Emulated ethernet needs that on the other side of the wire is usb host controller with appropriate driver which understands USBLAN protocol (or anything that is involved with this emulated ethernet connection).

    There is no way to use phone as usb host for external devices and we should accept this sooner or later. Intel's chip has only one usb host controller which is hardwired. To use it, we should physically cut the connection on the mainboard and add new connector to it. But doing this we will loose ability to use phone as a phone, because usb connection to BP is used to make calls and everything associated with using GSM.

    Hardcore solution would be to put small usbhub inside phone between AP and BP processors . Everyone can dream .

    silly me.

    thanks swifty and yaworski

    @yaworski
    Great explanation, I got what you're saying, I really did not dig deep into that usb ethernet support stuff I misunderstood it to be an emulation of a usb host even though it was a usb client.

    Thanks again

    If that's the case it looks like a diy usb hub will be the only solution which would be bad for battery life and would make the phone bulky.
