Default Motorola e680i lets make it support sdio wifi

OKAY EVERYONE I NEED YOUR HELP FAST.

here is the deal, the up and comming technology in respect to hand helds are these SDIO devices. Anyone here want to get some 802.11b/(maybe even g) action out of their Motoorola e680i? I KNOW I MUST FIND A WAY TO DO THIS.

Currently drivers to support such a device being released for the linux kernel. I need to know as much as you can all tell me about the kernel/os that our glorious phones (the e680i's) are running. Hasn't someone found the kernel for the e680i? I appreciate all the work you must have all done to attain this code. I could really use it here too!

check out these links if you even have a slight interest. (notice that cards are being sold that do support linux based OS's) It is simply a matter of the phone understanding what these devices have to say. Other types of SDIO devices soon to be a big hit in the mainstream market include gps, 1.3 megapixel cameras, mini text scanners, etc... etc...

cards that could support linux
the SD corp. cover up lets stop em in their tracks
Types of SDIO devices
these guys have the software tools we want for this task
these guys have the tools too but I think they will be freeware tools as opposed to the SDIOworks from them^^^

lets make this happen guys and gals. I am here to help yall just as much as you can help me don't hesitate to ask!

So we unless I am wrong here is what we have:
KERNEL for the e680i
the e680i is capable fo sdio card support (hardware)
sdio wifi cards that do support linux but we need to either mess with drivers or kernel to make compatable
IS THIS ACCURATE I MAY BE WRONG!!!!

a while back I had some communications w/ c-guys who reportadly had a SDIO wifi card that worked with the linux-based Zaurus, although the linux drivers were not officially supported. they seemed interested in working together and possibly making their SDIO driver source available to someone who could get it working for the e680.

things kind of stopped for me though because it is not clear how can we know for sure that the SD card reader on the e680 supports SDIO?

@nwisnia
where did you get your information that "the e680i is capable fo sdio card support (hardware)"? if it is true that we should really be pushing ahead.

well I am not 100% positive that it would support the hardware end of things thats what makes me sad. I just got my phone TODAY YIPPY, in time I may purchase that c-guys card sdio wifi card. If the phone recognizes it it may just support it. This information NEEDS to be confirmed with Motorola themselves. I don't know what kind of information they will be willing to give. Like I said this is all AS FAR AS I CAN TELL. I know about the c-guys deal with the zarus and it is hopeful. I have a PHD computer science friend who wants to help me work on this project so if i can get some help collecting the tools and the facts then we will all have drivers and kernel source for this to work!

P.S. THAT MEANS HELP ME!!!!! I am only one human with so much time to do research and verify information. THANK YOU ANYONE WHO CAN CONTRIBUTE.

E680i processor supports MMC, SPI and 1bit SD/SDIO up to 19.5Mbit/s, or 78Mbit/s with 4bit SD/SDIO mode.
Grab the pxa27x developer's manual from intel if you want more information about the these things.

Hey alebm thanks for that info man... how did oyu know about this being the specific hardware profile to look up? can you possibly link to this for all the other forums ppl.

Now humor the ignorent comment it is for the common knowledge of post browsers:
So does this mean I can just grab any sdio 802.11b card that has linux drivers and slap it in the e680i?

short answer~ probabily not no, but slight chance maybe...

long answer~ someone more techincal should take this one I dont know enough.

Thanks as always ~N

Information about the processor model inside the phone is public distributed, http://www.intel.com/design/pca/prodbref/253820.htm

About the card... No chance, sdio stack is not implemented, only mmc/sd.
I don't know how the development of sdio things are going but you will also have to get the driver for that card and compile it(considering that an compatible sdio stack interface will be implemented).
For me these cards very expansive compared to a simple usb wifi, so, I will keep trying to get usb host mode working instead of looking sdio hehe

does a usb wifi exist thatthe mini usb on the e680i?
If this is the case please send me a link to one....
i have someone who is VERY capable of taking drivers and integrating them and I am not too shabby myself!
I didnt even think about a "mini"usb wifi device I only ever thought of regular size wifi usb recivers... I am going to research this RIGHT NOW!
OR are you just using a converter to plug into the mini usb phone interface that links it to a regular usb wifi reciver?!?!
either way GREAT FRICKEN IDEA!!!

Thanks alebm for the idea!

i guess the usb wifi is designed to be used in pc's ordinary usb so the one with mini usb will be hard to find (or maybe not avaialable).
using converter is much more make sense but like alebm said we should get the usb host mode to work first
