    Default Development status?

    Hi:

I joined the forums because the e680i just got available here in Pakistan. Initially I got very excited about Linux because I had worked on Linux projects for VTech Helio and Compaq iPAQ (pre OPIE). Then I contributed to some J2ME APIs with Symbian phones and a PALM.

However, reading through all the forums here it seems that Linux is not really OPEN on the e680i phone.

I understand that J2ME MIDP 2.0 is working fine on this phone although the sandbox does get restrictive at times.

But before going out to buy this phone I would like to hear the current status on the possibility of developing Linux applications.

    1. Can we write non-gui applications by simply cross compiling or are other libs on the phone modified by moto as well, meaning headers are not compatible?

    2. The ezx sdk is for e680 or does it work for "i" as well?

    3. Does the opie proxy work on the "i"? How did somebody manage to get it working without the headers?

    4. Running two servers would definitely not something the phone can manage all the time. What are the chances of ezx apps running on standard opie server or vice versa?

    5. Is anybody working on a huge download containing kernel sources, cross compiler tool chain and OE tools in one? It maybe bad for the bandwidth but I see people have to go through a lot of things to get everything set up.

Thanks a lot, and congrats for the progress that I see on different threads.

    welcome

    1. yes, kernel headers available, and other things like the db is standard berkeley

    2. sdk is for e680, i version is partially different

    3. yes - no idea, ask cyph

    4. think this is not easy possible

    5. perhaps you start with this if everything is legal with the package i can host it on the e680 sourceforge page, there is enough bandwith

that are my answers perhaps some more contributed guys answer better, i am just a java guru

regarding the opieproxy stuff, i don't think you need any of the e680 or e680i headers. as far as i can tell this was done by modifying the stock qt-2.6.10 sources to use the proxy, then compiling opie agains these modified qt libs. an easy way of developmennt is to grab cyph's opie.cramfs image, then compile opie apps against the qt-libs in there (it worked for me to get opie apps that werent part of cyph's opie package, as well as Xqt, working...)

Thanks a lot, I was asking about proxy to find out a way to use the same window server, the VBA or GBA guys may have a clue if they are using the ezx window server. But well I'll be able to experience the performance while opie is running once I get the phone, it might be enough for some applications. Still not perfect, but its not one of those dead ends like the bootloader + driver things which are absolutely necessary for a full custom linux distro.
