Sorry to say but I think, there is no hope for this with A768. I have A1200 which has nearly similar form factor but much more users and I had to do it all myself (with nearly no knowledge about Linux or phone hacking). And I suppose I wouldn't be able to do it with A768.
btw. my first posts here were very similar to your's

I suggest to sell your A768 (even though it's a really nice phone, it's outdated, no developer cares for it) and buy A1200 (not A1200E! Who can use EDGE in Germany?). There you can flash firmware with german umlaute (and other special characters).

A1200 is a better phone anyway with external memory card and multimedia capabilities (by far the best I ever had and I had A760 some years ago which was very similar to A76. Look for it

It seems to be that I am not the only german A768 user.

jms, how did you get your A768?
I have the sam problem with the german "umlaute" and I have never had any hope for that..
