USB cable question

Is it true that I can use the phone with any mini-port (5pin) USB cable and plug into any Windows machine and it is recognized as USB mass storage device without any extra drivers to install?I'm asking because it only works at home. When doing it with other machines (Win XP, Win ME) nothing happens and the device is not recognized.

But I think there is something wrong with Motorola's USB driver:
While my USB stick gets recognized on practically every Windows machine, it works on some and doesn't on others when connecting the A780...
