SSL doesn't work with the builtin email client. I get my gmail via the web. I have also forwarded a copy of my gmail to my isp account which I have set up on the phone. I don't know if there are any 3rd party email clients which will work.
Hi all. I'm trying to make a decision on getting the A780 and I read a posting on howard forums that said that the phones email client doesnt support SSL authentication. Is this true?
I ask because one of the main reasons I am contemplating buying this phone is because I thot I could use it with my Gmail account. As you know gmail requires ssl (and STARTTLS) authentication at both the pop and smtp levels.
wondering if anyone has any comments regarding this.

Thanks f0x0r!
one clarification: when you say "via the web" .. is that on the opera browser on the a780 ? if so, how does that work out? is it pretty usable ? scroll bars and all ... ?

It works great with Opera or Opera Mini. I prefer Opera Mini over the preloaded Opera browser not because it saves data transfer rates because I have unlimited on my phone but because it works faster and looks better than the original Opera.
Are you still debating whether or not to buy this phone? I promise you won't be disappointed. I just purchased my 2nd A780 with GPS and CoPilot Live for North America. I am going to sell my original A780 if you are interested. It is running the latest firmware and has all the goodies pre-installed. (MPKG, MTF, linloader, TLinux theme, modded tux boot screen, etc.)
Hey, great, thanks for the offer f0x0r! How much were you wanting for it anyways?
I live out here in Hyderabad, India. Am assuming from your post that you are located in the US of A. Wonder if it might be feasible to ship it out. Which version of the A780 is that ? is it the one with EDGE? GPS?
My main issue with the phone is that it doesnt play nice with OSX. I have a powerbook as my main home system and have a Dell PC at work. Will have to look into using the PC as a main conduit for syncing my contacts and using that online mobisync to sync OTA.
Am also praying that some bright spark in Apple decides to add the a780 to the isync compatibility list to the rumoured isync enhancements in 10.4.7 ...
er .. the last line should read ... "in the rumoured isync enhancements of 10.4.7" ..
Yea, I hope so, gongura. Support for E680, E680i, A780 and A1200 would be a good news, since L6, L7, U6, and V3i are already supported (CMIIW).

I am putting something together and you will see the post for my old A780 in the 'Garage Sale' section of this forum. It does have EDGE but no GPS functionality.
AJZaurusUSB kernel extension (usbnet driver for OSX) version 0.2.8 work on Mac OSX 10.2! I build it from source because 0.2.8 binary not support 10.2. The latest version (0.3.2) work on OSX 10.4 and support A780 and Ming by default but not tested yet.
eXMMS and Rockbox running on E680, E680i, E680g, A780, A1200 and ROKR E6
Lack of SSL authentication (for sending emails) is a serious limitation. The A780 cannot be called a business phone without the feature,
