The pitiance is... that no A780 in Indonesia
also no EDGE coverage (though we--Indonesian import so many EDGE-enabled-country phones)
./pity me
Thanks to my provider i have done some download tests to compare GPRS to EDGE.
At the moment my provider is upgrading to EDGE so i have some spots where EDGE is available and some other with only GPRS. It looks for me that my mobile can detect where EDGE is available. In case there is only GPRS it is falling back to the old G in the topbar
Thanks to evaldas for his SEEM editing guide How to enable EDGE on A780
I have downloaded this file http://www.motorolafans.com/MotoModF...nverter034.zip
EDGE 6 minutes
GPRS 11 minutes 45 secs
So i can see a double in speed
This makes it prove, that it is not only a graphical change!

Here, even with only gprs coverage i still get an E icon. Maybe firmware differences, i dont really know.
3.49MB in 6 minutes is 79.5kbps. I think this is just GPRS Class 8 (on 4(d)+1(u)), this configuration would give you a maximum download speed of 80kbps and upload of 20kbps. This is still far away from EDGE speeds which are rated up to 236.8kpbs for download and 59.2 for upload.

Speed depends on a number of factors, for both Edge and GPRS.
I think that the best test you can do, is to disable the Edge seem, and then measure the speed again, at the same place you measured the 79.5kbps speed.
79.5kpbs is very high for gprs.. AFAIK you would only get speeds like this with GPRS if you are less than 2km away from the baste station.

Thanks for your suggestions.
This test was not very promising
- same A780, same place, same file and without EDGE SEEM edit: 6minutes 45seconds
Not a big deal.
Can depend on bad thermical disturbance, sun eruptions or wrong moon phase.
If the test with a real EDGE device shows more speed i will change the title of this thread.
(Not the first time i was disappointed with Motorola, but we are here at MFC)
AFAIR, motorola never advertised a780 as being edge capable.
I think that this bit only enables the E icon. Its like the ezx platform supports edge, but at the time of a780 release very few providers had it, so they switched the BP to a cheaper version to save on manufacture costs.
I would be disappointed case similar tests proves that A1200E has no edge.![]()

Motorola Motorola A780
Complete Connections
With the ability to support EDGE networks, the Motorola A780 can provide up to three times the data speed of GPRS-capable mobiles, allowing for faster browsing speeds.

A test with a RAZR2 V8 was much worse
Same file, different location, 50% at 7 minutes.
Can depend on the location.
The reception was not optimal.
Or my provider don't give the full speed.
One more observation i have noticed:
This SEEM edit is not needed on the .74 firmware.

Hi,
For some more empirical info, I was using my A780 as a tethered modem to my laptop, and in Switzerland (on Swisscom) I got excellent and persistent EDGE coverage in the Alps (Valais region) - this was a Virgin Mobile SIM from the UK. Felt like a reasonable DSL connection - not super fast, but about 20-25K/sec on downloads
Comparing with an AT&T SIM I tried from a friends Blackberry,it roamed on Orange-CH as GPRS, and it was at least 4X slower (5k/s). Felt like a dialup modem.
Kudos to the connectivity packs, I had a weeks of internet access (using Mini-opera and tethering), while whizzing through the AlpsEDGE does work indeed.!! My next phone will have Wifi as well....
