Thread: Mobile GMaps

  1. #1

    Default Mobile GMaps

"Mobile GMaps is a FREE application that displays Google Maps, Yahoo! Maps and MSN Virtual Earth maps and satellite imagery on Java J2ME-enabled mobile phones, PDAs and other devices."

    Point your phone to:

    http://wap.mgmaps.com/

    Download MGMaps v1.22.00.

This has been tested on the A780 and works beautifully. It is a little slow especially if you don't have EDGE so be patient.

    This really rocks!

Unfortunately it doesn't work out of the box with my cheap ass Deutsche Telekom service, which blocks direct outbound access to port 80, but allows general web access through a WAP gateway. The midlet seems to work if its built-in proxy mechanism is configured to go through the WAP gateway, but the JVM seems to be configured to disallow this without a hack to registry.txt.

The Google version doesn't work at all because it doesn't have a proxy mechanism built in.

Am I doing something wrong here? Isn't the Java HttpConnection class supposed to be mindful of WAP gateways or something? There doesn't seem to be any place to configure it.

Mine uses the wap gateway but I haven't tried to use a proxy to connect to the different map services. I will try to locate a working anonymous proxy and see if it works.

I dont have time to do it myself, but it might be pertty easy to write a small program to give GMaps images in semi-realtime using the GPS.

In google maps, if you search for 25.858, -80.191, you get the location of those long/lat coordinates (that one is in Miami, FL). I dont have a phone /w GPS to try, but from what I hear, when you telnet to a certain port on your phone, it returns the long/lat coors.

A simple program could then send the URL request to http://maps.google.com/maps?q=25.858...0274&t=h&hl=en
    (long ) ( lat )

Sub the part under (long) and (lat) for the coords returned by your local GPS socket. This will give a page that is zoomed on on that location.

I never looked into the image format of the map, but the software mentioned about should give some clues. Just pull the image, disply, and refresh every time a new location is avaiable from the socket.

You could even enter a destination and get live directions =)

If i had the phone yet, i would start on it, but i dont know if it will work out well in the US, since the GPS is only supported in .EU =( either way, some food for thought

Followings are in the TODO List of MGMaps :

GPS support via bluetooth — MGMaps would be a lot better if it could automatically display the map for your location, by connecting to a GPS receiver using bluetooth.
AGPS support — Assisted GPS is a system that helps your phone with GPS receiver determine its exact location.

Google just announced its own "Google Local for Mobile":
    http://www.google.com/glm
It's in J2ME, and free for download. but does not support GPS yet.

    Another one is J2MEMap:
    http://j2memap.landspurg.net/
It's also in J2ME, and free for download. It supports GPS (JSR-179) but not tested yet.

I tried the Google Local. I downloaded the version for the Motorola v551. I couldn't access the menu to search for different locations but it seems the maps load a lot quicker than Mobile Gmaps. I will continue testing and hopefully I will find a version that allows me to access the menu.

I also tried the Google Local for the V551. Looks like since the A780 has a touchscreen and no corresponding utility buttons, you can't access the menus. I'll continue testing as well.

By the way, as stated, J2MEMap support already GPS thourgh standard GSR 179. The Bluetooth support of GPS device is on the way, and I excpect to have something running this week end, and I am looking for tester to help me with this....

    Thanks in advance...
