Heh, yes, the tinted shield came off when I pried at the slots on the top. It's held on by some very sticky double-sided foam tape, but it can be removed, and as long as you don't get too much crud stuck to the tape, it can be replaced.

I'll have more pics up later this week, probably. I didn't go so far as to desolder the shield on the back of the circuit board, but I could see under it fairly well, and didn't see any components. I also wired some old headphones to the springs, and while I could hear a bit of crackle when I made contact, I didn't get any sound through them. I don't think the contacts or the speaker are the problem.

The speaker near the hinge appears to be soldered to its contacts. I was able to pry it loose and hold it while making a call on speaker phone, and I can feel vibration when I do so - although the vibration could be transmitted from another speaker inside the body. I guess looking in there is my next step, if it's not a software problem.

Oh, here's an oddity: when I dial, and the call connects, I can hear a very small click from the "broken" speaker.

how did you manage to pry off the plastic cover after removing the two screws?

i have been trying for a while and couldn't do it. Do I start with the two holes from the top or I can start from the side?
hope it won't damage much to the keypad since the phone is not mine....

anyhow i have managed to find the dissamble guide from chinese site....
althought in the site they did not dissemble the keypad tho.

I started with the slots at the top, which is how I ended up taking off the plastic shield. This could easily go badly, so I would suggest doing what I did the second time around, and pry the sides loose first. The seam is on the inside of the flip, and there are three clips on each side - start near the top of the open flip, and work down each side, before going for the slots at the top. After those are all loose, it should come off easily.

    LOL
I have the same problem with my A780!
The problem which I found be a bad jack input of the headset.
A780 behave as in "headset mode" - not any sound but with speaker and plug-in headset yes!!
I tried to put a little bent tailor´s pin to the headset input. So I found the second contact in the hole is bad.It doesn´t return and it stay with contact with the phone (so the phone is thinkig the headset is still plug-in). I pushed this contact with a pin and the sound was listenable!!
But unfortenatelly when I plugged-in the headset again and pull out this problem were established again

    So the solution is:
Put Your phone to the local motorola service and request them for the change this bad headset input.Or if you know anybody who have a capability to repair a electronic machines request a change of the input by him.

I think you have to use an anti oxidant inside the jack.

Put the product inside by the jaclk of earpiece (slowly, you risk to damage the back of the display if you put much product inside!!)

    try.

It's possible that so you solve the problem..or not..may be

    FYI
I found that flexible ribbon cable connecting main phone part with the keypad part was broken. The only place to buy it I found is cnn.cn $7.99. Ordered just a few minutes ago

  7. Default phone jack

I've discovered the same problem and it is definately the phone jack. It has contacts that are separated when you plug in the earpiece, but are reconnected when you take the ear piece out. Unfortunately, this design fails when the phone jack gets a little old and the contacts wear out. The phone thinks the earpiece is always plugged in.

I'd love if someone knew where to get a new phone jack. I've taken the A780 apart to get to the circuit board with the phone jack but there are thousands of phone jacks on the market and it's hard to tell which one this is.

I'm thinking of buying a broken A780 just so I get a replacement jack, but since this part is prone to wearing out it'd be nice to know the part number and manufacturer.

    Anyone know the partlist?
