  1. Default Best firmware for newer Opera browser + EDGE?

I have a Taiwan-issued A780 which I bought off Ebay and use with T-Mobile USA... I LOVE the phone but I have a few issues:

--Problems accessing https:// sites using the Opera browser. People here have confirmed for me that with newer firmware, they can hit the sites I need to hit.

--Blank text messages when I check voicemail or have a new voicemail

--Just a "G" in my status bar as opposed to "E" for EDGE.

    --Display doesn't show "T-Mobile" but rather "310-260"

    My current firmware:
    R52_G_0D.43.A3P
    BP: R52_G_0D.32.B1P
    BP Flex: GSOA780T673A019
    DSP: 62252500

I have downloaded all the tools mentioned here like PST 7.1.1 and P2KMan and am ready to apply a firmware update, but my question is, coming from a number as low as 43 / 32, will I have problems going to the 61 or 74 firmware?

Can I expect to lose any functionality, or have language branding other than English after the update? Anything else I should look out for before I "take the plunge"? This is my first time hacking my phone (or any phone). I do realize I'll need to edit the SEEM in order to fix the blank text message problem.

Any advice is much appreciated by this newcomer...

EDGE is probably a cosmetic issue. The theory is that it's on whenever possible, and there is a SEEM that controls whether the "E" icon is ever displayed.

If you upgrade firmware, don't install the R52_G_0D.61 or R52_G_0D.74 firmware, or if you do, install the R52_G_0D.50AHP first. The 0D.61 or 0D.74 superfiles include RSA-signed BP firmware that is only compatible with a BP chip that supports RSA signatures. Given the BP version you cite, your phone probably requires non-signed BP firmware, the newest version of which is included in the 0D.50AHP superfile. See the "Secure_Motorola_Boot" thread.

Both the 0D.50AHP and 0D.74 firmwares include Opera build 1229.

Download the enhanced seems on the neostream FTP server and upload it to your phone. It should take care of both of these issues. Make sure you backup your original in case the enhanced seem doesn't work for you. You can always replace your original.

It seems I have the same none signed BP firmware.
    My curent firmware is:
    R52_G_0D.50.ADP
    BP: R52_G_0D.39.B1P
    BPFlex: GCOA780000SA061
    DSP: 62252500
My problem is to find other version than China to support standard unicode. I looked at 0D.50AHP but that is also China version too. Could you show me other none signed version? Otherwise, if I upgrade to 74 firmware, which problem will I have?
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the info...

I have successfully corrected my Edge / Blank Text Messages problems using the SEEM edit instructions from Leo14888...

Question - would I gain anything from using the Enhanced Seems found on the Neostream site, or are the two alterations I made to Offset 02 and 89 the only real changes/enhancements?

Still want to upgrade firmware in order to have the improved Opera browser. I downloaded firmware from Neostream in the folder "China Branded" but I noticed it's 0d.50.AFP and not AHP. Any idea where I can get the AHP version?

Will I see any strange effects from having the China Branded firmware? Will I be able to un-brand it via a SEEM edit?

When updating the firmware, do I need to backup all my contacts, WAP / data settings or will those remain when I boot up again?

Sorry for all the questions, just want to be damn well sure of what I'm doing before I pull the trigger, given what little support is available for this phone here in the States.

    Thanks!

There's a whole topic about it:

Hm, what do you mean by strange effects? The part you're really after is the improved kernel and rootfs. There is nothing else you won't be able to get rid of or make identical to any other firmware, but the methods of doing so might be unpleasant. The China Mobile branded superfile does come with a strange set of applications. It reserves 20MB for the language pack and only 44MB for /diska. It also preloads a lot of crap on /diska that you'll probably want to get rid of, like a few games and apps that only work on China Mobile's GPRS, a gargantuan English-to-Chinese dictionary, a launcher app, and a help app.

You would have to redo your EDGE SEEM edits, but might be able to skip the others.

For the most part, unbranding involves replacing the language pack. There are a few ways of doing this. The most successful to date is to get a shell and use "dd" to rewrite /dev/tffsa with another language pack cramfs image. There should also be an SHX solution to this problem in the very near future.

Flashing the R52_G_0D.50.AHP superfile will replace all of the AP writable data stores, so back up anything you don't want to lose. Watch out for the bug where restoring the address book with MPT fails to put birthday and anniversary information in the calendar.

Thanks samr7 ... I did find that thread about 50.AHP after writing my previous post. Tried to download from the Chinese site but had troubles with the translation. Will keep trying.

One last question -- any way to get the updated build of Opera without flashing the whole firmware?

I think I read in another thread that you could copy certain folders/files from a phone that already had it, but anyone seen anywhere where you could download that?

Really, all I'm after now is the updated Opera; I don't feel like I'm missing any other key functionality with the older kernel (although I'm sure the newer FW is better).

Thanks for the warnings about the bugs and backing up.

Brian, the 50.AHP is in the folder name NEW BP FIRMWARE. Don't need to go anywhere else to download. It's split into many parts. You will need winrar to unpack them back into one file.

don't need to go someplace else !?!? uggh I have been trying for way to many hours to get that stupid web page to let me download, but since I am translating the page to english somehow no matter how many times I try to register it does not go through.

Can somone who has this, put it somplace it can be downloaded!?!?!

I have tried several web browsers with several options but their stupid registration is not working.

    Compleatly frustrated
