I have the same experience. I used boot_usb, this version:
    $Id: boot_usb.c 2456 2009-03-29 23:46:33Z wyrm $
I flashed kernel (starting from 0x020000) and mtd2 with the same size as the phone had originally.
After the flash process phone still displayed the text which is visible after boot_usb genblob 0. After successful flash I turned off phone and since that I can't turn it on. I tried this trick with removing battery pressing the keys and putting back the battery. I saw the blue screen for a sec but it gone away. I put the dead phone to charger and left there for 8 hours. After it I even could not see the blue screen with the battery + 3keys trick. I can measure 3.76 V on the battery. I think it is charged now. Anyone needs spare parts without gps?

I flashed the kernel like this

    ./boot_usb flash 0x20000

I dont know if the leading zero is a problem. But I think it is not.

If you saw the blue screen I would say phone is not dead. You cant charge your battery with a "half-dead" phone you need to connect the battery direct to some voltage. I measured my battery and it has 3.8V and the phone shows 20% of charge.
I would suggest to charge the battery with an external charger and try again the battery bootloader trick.
And this is realy tricky I tried it by myself and it is not working everytime.

Also I suggest to make a dualboot and if the selfmade kernel is working then flash it to the device.

Does subsidy lock mean lock of your sim card due to too many attempts to unlock?
I have no idea if it is related with firmware at all and what can be done on this level.
    ---
I'm sure that both the kernel and rootfs should work and their size was exactly the same as it should be and these were uploaded to proper areas of flash. I was not aware of low level of battery before flashing.

I cut some cables to create an offline charger. It charges with 5V. I tried it first on a dead battery, which was newly bought from China. I could turn the phone on once again in blue screen flash mode with simply using the 3 keys without the battery trick. I'm sure that my issue is the empty battery now. I should report success in some days. Thanks for the helps to everyone!

I have 2 batteries, both needed charging. I cut down connector of an old Sagem charger which gave out 8V despite of its text 4.5V. During charge I measured 3.8V. After charging one of the batteries I could not turn on the phone with it even in flash mode with battery trick.

I created an external battery some weeks ago with 4 pieces of 1.2V NiMh 2500mAh batteries, similar to "Radio Shack enclosed pack" as described on following page's bottom-right part:
    http://www.webos-internals.org/wiki/...l_Battery_Pack
I used its approx 5V output to charge my other battery by putting the 5V to the battery. I measured +3.7V on the battery and I put the cables to measure +5V on it. Charging 8 hours did not charge it to minimum. I could not turn the phone with it into flash mode. After the charge I measured on the phone's battery around 2 V.

Then I get out one 1.2V battery from 4 and replaced with a cable. I measured 4V on it. I wired it to back of the phone with the same polarity as the battery would sit there.

I had to use the battery trick to turn the phone into flash mode: I pressed the 3 keys when I plugged in the 4V. After it I reflashed the original kernel and file system. Now phone can be charged with its factory charger.

    Thanks a lot again!

After the charge I realized that my other battery, which was charged by Sagem charger was full. Probably more trials with battery trick could help also.

    As a summary:
    1. charge your battery outside of the phone
    2. before inserting the battery press the volume and camera and keep these buttons pressed when you insert the battery (keep trying if it is not successful at the first attempt!)
    3. flash the phone again
