  1. Default New user-friendly package system for E680i/E680; VBA

Edit: Apparently the stuff works on both E680 and E680i!; changed title to reflect this and added a few clarifications in red below.

    Hi,

I've put together an alternative to mpkg for distributing native applications. It ties into the phones natural 'install'/'uninstall' feature. Basically, it uses packages that are just specially crafted '.jar'-files.

I've chosen to call the system "neo-installer"; neo = natively executable object.
    Download it from here:
    http://www.dewmill.com/linuxphone.html

There is also a VBA re-packaged as a neo package on the same page.

    IMPORTANT:
    1) After installation, and after each phone restart you must run the 'startup.lin' that was created on your phones memory. (See readme for more info)
    2) The way the VBA emulator is written means that you must start it by long-clicking on a rom file and select 'open with...'. You cannot click on the VBA icon in the menu; the VBA has no own GUI.

Please let me know if the stuff works as it should.

i tried the NEO-Installer on my e680(not i), but it does not work -i think.

    1. i installed the "install-neo.lin" and unzip to "diska"

    2. started the "install-neo.lin"(i have the lin-loader installed!) and after some minutes i installed the GBA-Emu

    3. when did start the GBA-Emu but it shows just the text that says "you have to use the NEO-Installer.

It would be really nice if someone would like to test it on an actual E680i (I mean, it even sais E680i in the headline...)

    However, @y-cyas,
    Have you run 'startup.lin'?

You must do so at each phone bootup. Or insert it in some auto-bootup script if you have a modded firmware. AFAIK there is no way on an unmodified firmware to get something to auto-run on bootup.

But I suppose the problem can just be that you run it on the *not I* version of E680. Probably the issue is that the java runtime is somewhere else than on E680i. On E680i it is in /usr/SYSjava. Do you know where it is on E680?

And, eh, if nothing else, the VBA is specifically the E680i version I think.

oh i fergot to run the startup.lin, however...

i start up the startup.lin and start the VBA after it, but the e680's screen just "blinks" a bit and nothing happen...

i did't know where the java-directory is on the e680, cause i can not telnet in it with suse9.3 (kernel 2.6.11.4-xx) or i dont know how to do it on linux..

You cannot start the VBA by just clicking on it. You have to start it by long-clicking on a rom file and chose "open with". Perhaps I should emphasis this a little more in the VBA's readme.txt.

(This is not a limitation with the package system; its just that the VBA emulator does not have any built in file selector or anything -- it must always be started with a rom to run).

Go for a GBC rom to test with. I haven't tried any GBA myself, but I'm led to belive the phone is a little too slow for those. GBC seems to work wonderful though.

Oh, and please drop a note here if it works out for you: would be exciting if the neo-installer works witout any modification on E680 too!

Great news! Thanks for testing on E680 Now I have to edit the title...

I will also update some parts of the readme files to put more emphasis on the things you had trouble with: 1) Remeber to click 'startup.lin' and 2) VBA *MUST* be started by clicking a rom file.
