I am having the same problem mounting my A1600 mass storage in Ubuntu Linux. However I did come across the following information regarding a recent addition to the linux kernel:

* USB: cdc-acm: add usb id for motomagx phones
See the following urls:

(linux source)
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/...x/2.6.28-11.34
I am guessing that the latest Ubuntu 9.x [Jaunty] distro should have this functionality in the kernel, but I have not tried it yet because I am currently using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS [Hardy] version.
I am hoping that by having the kernel recognize this device's usb id, it will know that it is a mountable volume.
Perhaps this is a good reason for me to finally upgrade.
