Default Please help with root directory

I know this might sound stupid. But what is the root directory. It never CLEARLY specifies in any of the threads. And when I brought up the directory of my TF card all I had was a system folder. Very confused so I just created a file and called it root. It seems to be working but was confused in the matter. Thanks for the help.
