can some one tell me what EDGE is?

EDGE is basically software that comes on 3G phones, which allows for faster internet connection on your phone, but your service provider's network must support EDGE for it to work o your phone.

Just a little correction to your answer, it doesn't have to be 3G as EDGE is not a 3G technology it's considered as 2.5G

Actually, it depends on the classification of the device, the class 4 EDGE device could be 3G rated
