The File Manager is highly protective of the Ming and keeps you away from stuff that would just confuse your typical user. In any case, the root file system is a CRAMFS and is thus inherently read-only.
There is no console on a consumer Ming.
There is a native code compiler available, if you can convince Motorola to let you have it. People are trying to cobble together a compiler but until someone snags the headers from a Motorola kit it will be less than perfect.
The Ming doesn't do X Windows, it has no X server.
The supported way for your average joe developer to write apps for the Ming is via Java. Motorola just released a Java Developer Kit that specifically supports the Ming and can be downloaded from http://www.motocoder.com (you do need to register and have a credible "I'm a developer" story to tell them.)
