Thread: MP4 for A1200?

  1. #1

    Default MP4 for A1200?

I thought the A1200 supports MP4 in addition to 3GP? I down loaded some video Ipod MP4's, and they will not play on the A1200, what gives? It gives me error: "Cannot find plug-in"

I thought the A1200 support likes 10 file types in the Real Player?

I ran the experiments too. I haven't found a single video in my collection it can play.

The iPod appears to have more horsepower for decoding video that the Ming.

Helix on the Ming likes Real 8 audio/video but appears to need them cut down to something like 15fps. It doesn't eat H.264 (missing plug-in) but does do mainline MP4's. Again, if you can figure out what the max frame rate is.

It does play 192kbps AAC audio files from AllOfMp3 so our Russian friends here should be happy.

One of my challenges for my 2nd day with my Ming is finding a video for it that it will play. RIght after I figure out if its SSL works with my email service.

I found out part of the problem.

First of all, resolution cannot exceed 320x240 and MORE importantly, FPS must be 25 or less.

I downloaded a great program called winAVI MP4 Converter. It cost money, but I think I'm going ot buy it.

Most of the IPOD MP4 are in a strange format which isn't true MP4 so many readers have a problem reading.

I download the AVI version and convert to MP4 at 320x240 FPS 25 and it works like a charm.. Totally mind blowing.

Now my next project to place a full length movie on the A1200. I just upgraded to 1gig of ram so maybe I can put a couple on there for kicks.

    admin,

tried encoding with super, but the real player kept saying parameters exceeded. What should the container and the codec be set to?

Quicktime Pro ($29.95) can encode MP4's the Ming likes.

Export File and select Movie to MPEG-4.
Then click the Options... button and set everything as follows:

    Video Tab
    File Format MP4.
    Video format: MPEG-4 Basic
    Data rate: 320Kbps
    Image SIze: 320x240 QVGA
    Frame Rate: 15 fps (maximum)
    Key Frame: Automatic
    Video Options: Re-sync markers checked.

    Audio Tab
    Audio Format: AAC-LC (Music)
    Data Rate: 80Kbps
    Channels: Stereo
    Output Sample Rate: Recommended
    Encoding Quality: Better

That's a main profile MPEG-4 and has excellent sound quality.

The Helix site said it only does H.264 in 3GPP but I tired a H.264 MP4 anyway. Sure enough, you get the "required plugin missing" message.

The Helix site said it does H.264 in 3GPP so I tried that next and got "required plugin missing".

Darn, I guess we got a lesser version of Helix on the Ming.

By the way, most iPod videos are H.264 because H.264 is night vs day better than main profile MPEG 4.

There is a Helix Real 10 encoder for the Mac, I'm going to try that next.

The Helix Real 10 plug-in encoder (free) works but it offers 15 fps or 30 fps. Only 15 works with the Ming.

I chose 320x240 and the PocketPC Local Play Back 200kb under Streaming.

My reference video for all this was the Gwen Stefani Pepsi iTunes TV ad. Between main profile MP4 and Real 10, I preferred the Real 10.

If I could get the Ming to do H.264 vs Real 10: H.264.

I think there is a command line Helix Producer you can get for free that would put out the Real 10 files as well.

Ming supports 25fps, or at least mine does. and up to 320x240. Past 25 fps it states parameter exceeded. I don't actually use 320x240 cause the framerate drop is huge, the standard mobile resolution something like 196x176 is quite good and overall not too noticeable difference and plays at pretty much full fps.

So if I understand you correctly, you can encode 25-fps, it will play it, but you don't actually get 25-fps at 320x240 i.e. it drops frames?

So that implies that the Helix encoder, which is the other half of the Real One Player, is correct to limit to 15-fps.

I find the Real 10 files the Helix encoder makes at 320x240 15fps are pretty smooth on the Ming. I've encoded several TV episodes and I've found it to be quite watch-able.

Of course H.264 on my 5G iPod is even more watch-able, but if I can only bring one device its going to be the Ming right?

Cool, yah all I was saying is that 320x240 25fps looks terrible on ming. I didn't know that 15fps looks good, so I'll use that.

About bringing one device, I am so excited about the ming. It literally represents a new generation of phones. I mean people have tried this with the palm and ce for years, but it truelly is the first merger of PDA and phone. (Slapping an attenna on an oversized Ipaq does not make a phone)

Ming will place motorola in direct competition with Ipod and Blackberry. The next generation phones like this will be amazing in a few years.

If you think about it, I would say motorola is a good stock buy for a stock trader when this finally hits. This phone will be the hottest thing in america.
