Thumbs up APP: Mobile Planetarium

Hi friends!

I´m using this APP for some time now and wanted to share it with you.

This is a Great help to anyone who goes out to take some night sky photos or just simply like to know what star is looking at or just for fun and education. Its very complete.

My experience with Mobile Planetarium didnt started very well... so i am going to save some effort to Ming´s users who want to try it

The totally working java is the mdip 1.0, the difference is in the keys! I´ve tried with no success to map the keys of the mdip 2.0 and the screen also takes a different aspect and some keys simply dont show... feel free to try it, maybe you can map the keys and then it would be even better!

It simulates whole sky at any point on earth with constellations, stars up to 6 mag, solar systems and some other celestial objects.

It may be a useful tool when you are bathed under star lights with your cell phone in the pocket. This also gives you a serious and detailed guide of current sky above your head at your location.

Quote:
* Both Horizontal and Equatorial Coordinate Display of whole sky.
* 88 constellation names, 83 constellation stick figures, 110 messiers and stars up to mag 6.0 (5080 stars, and 50 common star names).
* Full 8 planets plus Sun and Moon is calculated, information is displayed respectively on a seperate screen.
* Location and Date/Time can be set at startup. Applicable for any location on earth given a specific time.
* Sophisticated display control over all information on screen.
* Search for any type of object and GOTO functions.
* Quickly jump over time with adjustable time steps.
* Auto update of celestial object positions.
* Support English and Chinese display of celestial object name

No mod needed

Just install the java mdip 1.0 as regular java app. (jar and jad)

All the functions work, you can put various zones so that when you travel you know what stars are above.

My preferences are with magnitude 5 stars, planets, constellations figures and labels active. You can view the sky in equatorial or normal view.

Almost forgot it has a search database with the details about planets and stars

Try it! Its a Great App for who likes to look at the sky.
P.S. Orionids already started, with this its a very simple task to find Orion, even if you dont know what it looks like.

Dude, I got some problems with it on my A1200. You can't even access half of its functions but the app is not touchscreen-compatible. you can just rotate the sky and move around a bit, you see many many yellow spots (stars) that you can't click on and there's no way to find out more about them, I think. MIDP-1.0 version installed.

The app's got some potential, yeah but.. what's it good for if we can't use it?

Hi,

intermario_gr i will try to resume what i´ve found;

In the Mdip 1.0 all the functions except 4 keys are touchscreen via preferences in the menu or in the star chart menu.
The only unsigned keys are the zoom in, zoom out, + stars, - stars.

The Mdip 2.0 is all touchscreen but the keymap is a mess... i´ve lost too many time trying to map the keys with Java adapter. I gave up and tried the 1.0 version at least the program works well (you can exit and search for stars on the contrary in the 2.0).

I dont know what expectations did you have but for a Java made 2 years ago this is very good in my opinion. There isnt nothing better not even paying that i´ve seen.

If you tic in the stars nothing happens because the search is in the menu. The star chart is just for guidance, that is the point.
If you want all functions in touchscreen be prepared to map the keys...and start with the 2.0 mdip.

Tip: In the "Help" you will find the keys.

For the Mdip 1.0
(Directions Keys): Navigate
(1): Zoom Out
(3): Zoom In
(*): Decrease Stars
(#): Increase Stars
(fire): Switch to normal/ Time mode

Normal mode - also in the preferences
(2): Toggle Constelations Name
(4): Toggle Planets
(5): Toggle Constelations Figures
(6): Toggle Messier Objects
(7): Toggle On-Screen Info
(: Toggle Grid Lines
(9): Toggle Star Names
(0): Switch Language (English/ Chinese)

Time Mode
(2): Increase Time Interval
(5): Decrease Time Interval
(6): Increase Time Unit
(4): Decrease Time Unit
(9): Step Time Forward
(7): Step Time Backward
(: Switch Update Settings
(0): Switch to NOW

Hope this helps

Thanks nodramachicks

This is was the version you posted here was missing.. These features are now accessible in the touchscreen version

Alright, I managed to adapt this app to touchscreen but the buttons on the lower part of the screen have dissappeared! Once I have the sky showing, the only way to get access to preferences/display settings is to minimize the app (red button), then red button again to restore it, so the main menu comes up.

Has anyone managed to completely convert MobileStarChart so that the controls on the lower part of the screen are still visible?

Thanks.

The "touchscreen version" that is the mdip 2.0 doesnt need the 3 buttons that are visible in the mdip 1.0 because they are acessible through the display. (test with java adapter)

If you open the mdip 2.0 with Java adapter you will find many controls and lack of buttons for all the functions...

I´ve tried many configs and found that even circular movements or horizontal or vertical with the stylus substitute keys... like i said before its very complicated for me to remap the keys in that version. Hope you can do it!

BTW the "key codes" APP didnt work for me when i tried to find what keys do what.
