Arrow [APP] Vi IMproved editor (VIM)

Hi,
I found a copy of VIM (i.e., an improved version of the VI text editor) from http://www.comp.nus.edu.sg/~luzm/e680/, which works on A1200 via eKonsole. It was first mentioned by slickrock in VI editor for EZX?. I just made an installation package for it.

How to install:
1) install eKonsole from [APP] ekonsole for A1200, (you may obviously skip this step if you have already installed eKonsole!)
2) unzip and install attached file
3) restart the phone, and press the vim icon (an eKonsole window is then opened)
4) type "../vim/vim" (without the quotes) in the eKonsole window

There is a guide about the VIM's commands in ftp://ftp.vim.org/pub/vim/doc/book/vimbook-OPL.pdf.

I hope you find it useful.
Regards
rezasani

Many Thanks for correcting me. I somehow over looked the link you mentioned when I searched the forum for VIM (old times! ).

So, many thanks to "haskellmail", too, for cross-compiling VIM for E680.

I flashed A1200R_CMCC_Nolock_R532C2_G_11.30.32P_OENT_XP_V1 and it has vim installed in the bonus directory.

Code:
$ ls /usr/data_resource/preloadapps/qtapps/bonus
bash2 contest.tar.gz gawk gbk2utf8 ren2utf vim
I use the bash2 shell, but do not know exactly what the other apps do.

Hi,
Actually, I cannot check this because I don't have an E6. However, it should work on E6, because as far as I know these phones have the same processor. I hope those who have E6, comment on this.

By the way, I've created a bash profile (called ".profile"), with just an "alias" command", which if added to the ekonsole directory, vim can be called in any directory by just simply typing either "vim", or "vim filename" (without "). You can also add other similar "alias" commands to ".profile" to ease the usage of the fabulous eKonsole (you can do this by "vim .profile")!

To use the bash profile
1) unzip the attached file into the root of your SD.
2) enter ekonsole, and type the following commands (without "):
"mv /mmc/mmca1/.profile ." (note that there are two blanks in both commands)
"chmod a+rwx .profile"
3) exit ekonsole and enter again

You should then be able to use vim anywhere (via the ekonsole window) .

regards
rezasani

P.S. I needed to edit the "registry.txt" of QuickNotes and did that by vim (see attached image). As far as I know, this cannot be done by other available text editors that work on A1200 (The editors that I know, either cannot enter the ".system" area, or can edit only very small files). Although Vim's interface is not very user friendly, it is a very powerful text editor!
