  1. Arrow [APP] Unyverse an Online/Offline Wikipedia/RSS Reader +

Very cool program that I stumbled upon recently, and since I didn't see it mentioned here, I figured I'd give it a shout out.

Basically what we have here is a program that wants to turn your info/life into one big wiki by allowing you to post notes, contacts, etc., to your own public or private wikis . Couple this with the ability to search and save Wikipedia articles to your phone, a pretty good RSS reader, and the ability to sync all this info with your online account, there's a ton of potential here (IMHO). While not all of the program's functions are working, (the program seems to be a bit on the beta side and the interface could use some tweaking), the Wikipedia module is functioning 100% and is worth the download just for that.

    For more info go here:
    http://unyverse.com/

The Java version can be found here:
    http://unyverse.com/download/default.aspx

It should be noted that you don't need to sign up for an online account. When the program starts, it will ask you for a PIN code which you'll get when you sign up. There's no way to enter this code, so just hit the "skip" softkey, and away you go.

Hey, this looks like a really nice idea.
I tried the app, but it won't connect to its server and keeps giving me "Unyverse server unreachable. Please try again later."
Opera mini and the web browser work on my phone so don't know why thats happening?
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm assuming your using version 1.4, which seems to have a problem initializing the phone's network connection consistently. Just go to your phone's Data Network section under Setup and connect to your data network before launching Unyverse. It's weird because I don't have to do this every time I launch Unyverse, but when I can't get connected this technique always works for me. Hope it helps.

And just for everyone else, Unyverse is up to beta 1.4 and this release adds official support for Moto A780/A1200's. The interface is still not there yet, but at least you can sign into the program and sync it with your Unyverse web account. If you do decide to install it, when it asks you to "press the left button" just press up on the joystick. Hopefully the next release will have a better/improved UI for our phones.

    That didn't help
I think the problem is with my gprs provider (airtel net-on-phone (nop) plan), because many third party apps like gmail app, rss reader, unyverse, etc don't work on my phone but web browser and opera mini does.
apparently the apn they give doesn't provide direct html and socket connectivity.
    anyone knows any workaround?

I still prefer to browse Wikipedia with Opera Mini Mod.

    Hi,

after installing the application on my MING, it asks me to PRESS the LEFT Menu Key. On pressing any key on my MING, it displays the following message:

Cannot identify your phone model. Please press the LEFT menu key.

Can anyone help me with this error.

    Thanx a lot in advance.

Pressing up on the joystick got me past the LEFT menu key problem. But how do I enter the pin to sync with my online account? I figured out that if I pushed down on the joystick it let me enter the first digit, but how do I move right to enter the other digits?

Never mind -- you push the joystick in.

ARGH. From the FAQ on the Unyverse website:

I have a Motorola Java phone and can't see the Import Contacts item
The Import Contacts functionality is currently not supported on Motorola Java phones due to more restrictive security constraints which prevent third-party applications from accessing the native phonebook.

OK. Fixed that by modifying the permissions, a la the directions in the sticky Guide to Modding your A1200. And now I have uploaded the contacts in my phone to my Unyverse wiki, which I will edit, and then sync again.

Between this and GCalSync, I may not need to gripe about the lack of Linux sync software anymore...
